AC running but blowing warm air? Check the thermostat, filter, and outdoor unit
The indoor fan can circulate room-temperature air even when cooling is not operating. Start with settings and airflow, then stop for ice, electrical trouble, or suspected refrigerant problems.
Why it matters
Fan operation does not prove that the refrigeration side is cooling. Trane explains that a thermostat fan set to On can circulate unconditioned air between cooling cycles, while both Trane and Carrier identify a dirty filter as a common cause of poor cooling and possible coil freeze-up. Carrier also lists a blocked outdoor condenser, frozen evaporator coil, refrigerant leak, heat-pump problem, and compressor fault as possibilities. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that a clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces cooling ability. Because refrigerant diagnosis and handling are not homeowner work, EPA advises using technicians certified under Section 608.
Safe checks, step by step

Check the indoor conditions first. If the home is becoming dangerously hot, prioritize people over troubleshooting. Move older adults and other heat-sensitive occupants to a reliably air-conditioned location, check on them frequently, and seek medical care immediately if symptoms of heat-related illness occur.

Read the thermostat without removing it from the wall. Select Cool, set the target several degrees below the displayed room temperature, and set the fan to Auto. Cancel an unexpected schedule, Eco, Away, or vacation mode if the owner’s manual explains how. Replace thermostat batteries only if they are identified as user-replaceable. Do not remove the thermostat, touch wiring, or bridge terminals.

Allow at least five minutes for normal compressor protection delay, then compare several supply registers. Note whether the air is warm everywhere, only certain rooms are affected, airflow is weak, or the outdoor unit starts. Do not keep lowering the thermostat or rapidly switch modes; one clear observation is more useful to a technician than repeated restarts.

Turn cooling Off at the thermostat before checking the filter. Inspect or replace only a filter in its normal owner-accessible slot, using the exact dimensions, type, and airflow-arrow direction approved for the system. Restore the filter cover completely. Never run the system without a filter or remove an air-handler, furnace, or coil panel.

Fully open supply registers and keep return grilles clear of furniture, rugs, curtains, boxes, and dust mats. From ground level outdoors, remove only loose leaves or vegetation lying around the unit while it is off. Maintain clear space described in the equipment manual, but do not bend or brush fins, spray chemicals, insert tools, remove a grille, reach toward the fan, or open the disconnect or service panel.

Look only at safely visible exterior conditions. Ice or frost on accessible tubing or near the indoor cabinet, excessive water, repeated clicking, hissing, oily residue, or an outdoor fan that does not run during a cooling call means stop. Set cooling to Off and arrange service. Never chip ice, apply heat, add refrigerant, install a leak sealer, test a capacitor or contactor, or open any refrigerant or electrical enclosure.
Stop and call a professional if
- Smoke, sparks, scorching, a burning-electrical odor, or a breaker, disconnect, wire, cabinet, or outdoor unit that is buzzing, damaged, loose, or unusually hot
- The correctly labeled AC breaker is tripped, trips again, or the panel is wet, damaged, unlabeled, or unsafe to access—do not reset repeatedly or open the panel or disconnect
- Ice or frost appears on tubing or equipment, water is overflowing or reaching electrical parts, or cooling remains warm after the system has thawed naturally with cooling off
- You hear hissing, see oily residue, suspect a refrigerant leak, or anyone proposes adding refrigerant or leak sealer without finding and repairing the cause
- The outdoor unit is silent, repeatedly clicks or hums without starting, makes grinding or metal-on-metal noise, or its fan is not turning during a normal cooling call
- Diagnosis would require opening equipment, reaching through a grille, touching wiring, a disconnect, capacitor, contactor, control board, motor, coil, compressor, or refrigerant line, or bypassing any safety device
