Editorial and Cost Methodology

How we research symptoms, set estimate ranges, and produce repair-versus-replace guidance.

Cost estimates

We compare current national consumer cost references, government material where relevant, and common installed-price components. Each calculator record displays its source and review date.

Ranges are rounded planning estimates. Geography, brand, model, access, permits, labor minimums, parts, disposal, and necessary upgrades can change a real quote.

Decision logic

The calculator compares the midpoint of the professional repair range with the midpoint of installed replacement and considers expected service life. A repair near or above half the installed replacement cost creates a replacement signal; reaching expected life also creates that signal.

This is a value signal, not an automatic instruction. Reliability history, efficiency, warranty, fit, features, and the exact diagnosis can justify a different decision.

Safety and updates

Guides cover visible, homeowner-safe checks and state when to stop. We do not instruct users to bypass safety devices, open refrigerant systems, repair gas controls, or work on energized circuits.

Material is reviewed periodically and dated. Source links are shown so readers can examine the underlying reference and current terms.
