AC airflow weak? Check the filter and registers before calling

A correctly installed filter and open air path can restore airflow. Ice, recurring weakness, electrical symptoms, and internal equipment checks belong to an HVAC professional.

Short answer: Turn the cooling system off, inspect the filter, and replace it only with the exact size and an approved type if it is visibly dirty. Confirm supply registers are open and return grilles are unobstructed. If airflow stays weak—or you find ice, leaking water, a tripping breaker, or a hot electrical smell—leave the system off and call an HVAC professional.

A dirty filter slows airflow and makes heating and cooling equipment work harder. ENERGY STAR recommends checking the filter monthly during heavy-use seasons and changing it when dirty, at least every three months. Its maintenance checklist also notes that airflow problems can reduce system efficiency by up to 15 percent, while neglected filters can increase costs and contribute to early equipment failure.

Safe checks, step by step

    Set the thermostat to OFF and let the blower stop. If the filter is in a cabinet at the furnace or air handler, switch off power as directed by the equipment manual before opening the filter access. Do not remove a service panel.

    Photograph the old filter’s printed size and airflow-arrow direction before removing it. If access requires a ladder, attic entry, moving equipment, or reaching near exposed wiring, stop and use a professional.

    Replace a dirty disposable filter with the exact dimensions and a filtration level approved for your system. Clean a filter only when it is specifically labeled reusable and the manufacturer provides cleaning instructions; never wash a disposable cardboard-frame filter.

    Install the filter with its airflow arrow pointing toward the blower or indoor unit, then close the filter slot or grille securely. Open supply registers and move furniture, rugs, boxes, and curtains away from return grilles.

    Restore power, select COOL, and set the thermostat a few degrees below room temperature. Allow several minutes for any built-in delay, then compare airflow at multiple rooms. Shut cooling off if you see ice or water, and arrange service if airflow remains weak.

  • Ice appears on the indoor coil, refrigerant line, or cabinet—or returns after the system thaws
  • Water is leaking near wiring, ceilings, finished walls, or an overflowing drain pan
  • The blower does not run, grinds, squeals, smells hot, or starts and stops repeatedly
  • The breaker trips again, or you notice buzzing, sparks, melted insulation, or a burning-electrical odor
  • Airflow remains weak with the correct clean filter and clear registers, or only certain rooms are affected
  • Diagnosis would require opening equipment panels, testing energized parts, entering an unsafe attic or crawlspace, or opening the refrigerant system
