Water heater has no hot water? Check power, settings, and warning signs
A depleted tank, changed operating mode, lost electrical power, or a model-specific alert can interrupt hot water. Leaks, gas odors, carbon-monoxide alarms, and repeated breaker trips require immediate professional help.

Safe checks, step by step

Check for an emergency before troubleshooting. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, anyone has possible CO symptoms, or you smell or hear escaping gas, do not operate switches, phones, appliances, or the electrical panel inside. Get everyone outside immediately, call 911 or the gas utility from a safe location, and do not return until responders say it is safe.

Compare several fixtures. Test hot water briefly at a nearby sink and another fixture while avoiding scalding. If only one faucet or shower is affected, the fixture, mixing valve, or local plumbing may be the issue rather than the water heater. If every hot tap stays cold, continue with the heater checks.

Identify whether the unit is electric resistance, gas, tankless, or heat-pump from the exterior label and owner’s manual. Without removing a cover, read the normal display, status light, app, or user control. Record any error code and confirm the unit is not in Vacation, Away, or another low-output mode. Use only the normal control and the model instructions; do not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended setting.

Think about recent demand. A large bath, back-to-back showers, laundry, or dishwasher use can deplete a storage tank. Stop using hot water and allow the model’s stated recovery time. A.O. Smith notes that recovery varies by fuel and model; use the manual rather than repeatedly changing controls.

For an electric or heat-pump model only, inspect the home electrical panel if it is dry, intact, clearly labeled, and safely accessible. Reset the correctly labeled water-heater breaker once by moving it fully off and then on. Never remove the panel cover, touch wiring, open the water heater, press an internal reset, or repeat the reset if the breaker trips again.

Inspect only visible exterior conditions from a safe distance. Look for water below the unit, active dripping, corrosion, soot, scorching, a loose or damaged vent, blocked heat-pump airflow, unusual sounds, or a burning odor. For a heat-pump model, clean only an owner-accessible air filter exactly as the manual directs, with power off; stop if the task requires an equipment panel, plumbing, wiring, or refrigerant access.

- Water is pooling, actively leaking, reaching wiring, or coming from the tank body or temperature-and-pressure relief discharge pipe
- You see soot, scorching, smoke, melted material, corrosion around a vent, a separated vent connection, or abnormal flame through a normal viewing window
- The breaker trips again, the panel or unit is wet, or a cord, switch, breaker, disconnect, or wiring is hot, buzzing, sparking, burned, or damaged
- The same error code returns, the heater makes repeated banging or popping, water is rusty or foul-smelling, or the normal exterior controls and recovery time do not restore hot water
- Diagnosis would require opening a cover, testing voltage, pressing an internal high-limit reset, relighting a pilot, operating or repairing gas controls, touching the relief valve, draining the tank, altering venting, or opening a heat-pump refrigerant system
