Dishwasher leaking? Check the door seal, suds, loading, and hoses

The leak location and cycle stage can distinguish a blocked door seal, oversudsing, redirected spray, drain backup, or visible hose problem from an internal fault.

Short answer: Stop the cycle and keep people away from the wet area. If water is near an outlet, cord, junction box, disposal connection, or the dishwasher's underside, do not touch the appliance or stand in the water; disconnect power only at a dry, safely accessible, correctly labeled breaker. Close the dishwasher water-supply valve if it is visible and operates normally. After the area is safe, note whether water appeared at the door, under the sink, from an air gap, or beneath the machine and whether it happened during filling, washing, or draining. With power off, check for an item blocking the door, food on the visible gasket, excessive suds, an obstructed spray arm, and moisture at accessible under-sink hose connections. If water comes from underneath, a leak code returns, a hose or seal is damaged, or one supervised test leaks again, leave the dishwasher off and call a qualified technician or plumber.

Leak location changes the likely cause. Samsung advises checking visible supply and drain hoses, the rubber seal, dishwasher-only detergent, leveling, spray nozzles, and leakage codes. GE identifies oversudsing, plumbing or air-gap problems, door and gasket issues, and water redirected by clogged or damaged spray arms. Maytag similarly lists a damaged gasket, blocked door, supply or drain connection, inlet or overfill problem, and pump or motor seal as possible causes. Water beneath the cabinet deserves extra caution because electrical and internal pump components are nearby; CPSC advises never touching a wet appliance that remains connected to electricity.

Safe checks, step by step

    Make the area safe first. Cancel the cycle only if the controls are dry and safely reachable. Keep children and pets away. If water is near electricity or beneath the dishwasher, do not touch the appliance, open the door, unplug it, reach under the sink near wet wiring, or stand in the water. Turn off only the dry, safely accessible, correctly labeled dishwasher breaker; otherwise call a qualified professional.

    If the dishwasher's water shutoff valve under the sink is visible, dry, undamaged, and easy to operate, close it without tools or force. Do not disturb corroded plumbing. After electrical danger is ruled out, contain the water and photograph where it first appeared. Record whether the leak began during fill, active washing, draining, drying, or while the dishwasher was off.

    With power off and no active flooding, inspect the door area. Push both racks fully in and remove utensils, pan handles, or tall items that could prevent closure or redirect spray. Wipe food and residue from the visible gasket and door-contact surface with a damp cloth if the manual permits it. Stop for a torn, flattened, loose, displaced, or hardened seal; do not remove or replace it unless the exact model manual identifies that as homeowner work.

    Look for suds or foam. Use only detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers and only the amount directed for the model and water conditions. Dish soap, soap residue on hand-washed items, too much detergent, or spilled rinse aid can create foam that pushes water through the door. If suds are present, leave the machine off and follow the manufacturer's model-specific suds instructions; do not add improvised chemicals or run repeated cycles.

    Rotate only an owner-accessible spray arm gently by hand with power off, following the manual. Confirm that dishes are not blocking its path and look for visible food at spray openings or a split arm that could direct water toward the door. Clean removable parts only as the manual directs. Do not force an arm, probe openings with metal, remove the pump cover, or reach into hidden machinery.

    Inspect the dry, accessible under-sink area without moving or pulling out the dishwasher. Look for moisture at the visible supply line, drain-hose connection, disposal inlet, sink plumbing, and air gap if installed. A leaking faucet, disposal, trap, backed-up sink, or overflowing air gap may need a plumber. After correcting one clearly visible cause, run only one short, supervised test if the manual permits it. Stop immediately if water or a leak code returns.

Stop and call a professional if

  • Water is touching or approaching an outlet, cord, junction box, disposal wiring, breaker panel, or the underside of the dishwasher, or reaching a control requires standing in water
  • There is active flooding, the water valve will not close, plumbing is corroded or damaged, or the supply line, drain hose, air gap, disposal, sink, or household drain is leaking or backing up
  • Water appears from the center or underside of the machine, continues while the dishwasher is off, or returns during one supervised test
  • A leakage, overfill, or drain error returns; the dishwasher repeatedly starts its drain pump; or the breaker trips, buzzes, becomes hot, or will not remain on
  • The door gasket is torn, loose, hardened, or deformed; the door will not align or latch normally; or the tub, spray arm, cabinet, hose, or connection is cracked or damaged
  • Diagnosis would require pulling out the dishwasher, removing a toe kick or panel, reaching underneath, opening the pump or electrical enclosure, replacing an inlet valve or internal seal, testing energized parts, or bypassing a float, latch, leak sensor, or other safety device
