Washer won’t drain: five safe checks before service

Start with the filter, hose, and drain path. Stop if you find damaged wiring or cannot safely move the machine.

Safety first Disconnect power and water only when you can do so safely. Stop for gas, damaged wiring, flooding, or instructions beyond the owner’s manual.

    Unplug the washer and shut off both water valves before opening any service panel.

    Check for a canceled cycle or unbalanced load, then run the manufacturer’s drain or spin program once.

    Open and clean the pump filter if your model provides homeowner access. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready.

    Inspect the drain hose for a kink and confirm it is not pushed too deeply into the standpipe.

  5. 5

    If the pump hums but water stays put, or an error returns, stop. A blocked pump or failed component needs diagnosis.
