Repair or replace a washing machine: a practical decision guide

Age matters, but the repair type, current condition, and installed replacement cost matter more.

Safety first Disconnect power and water only when you can do so safely. Stop for gas, damaged wiring, flooding, or instructions beyond the owner’s manual.

    Start with the diagnosis. A hose, inlet valve, lid switch, or drain pump is different from a failed tub bearing, transmission, or major control assembly.

    Compare the complete repair quote—including labor, diagnostic fee, and warranty—with the delivered and installed cost of a suitable replacement.

    Consider remaining life. Around the expected-life range, an expensive repair is harder to justify, especially after repeated breakdowns.

    Include hidden replacement costs such as haul-away, new hoses, pedestal compatibility, delivery access, and possible electrical or plumbing corrections.

    Repair is often sensible for a younger, otherwise reliable machine with a contained fault. Replacement becomes stronger when a major repair approaches half the installed replacement cost.
