AC leaking water indoors? Check the filter, ice, and condensate drain
Water near an indoor air handler can come from a backed-up condensate drain, damaged pan, frozen coil, disconnected drain, or installation problem—and continued cooling can make the damage worse.

Carrier says common causes of indoor AC water leakage include a clogged condensate drain, a frozen evaporator coil linked to restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and a damaged drain pan; it recommends turning the system off because continued operation can worsen water or equipment damage. Trane likewise identifies damaged pans, clogged drains, and frozen coils, and recommends shutting down a leaking system and calling for repair. Lennox notes that dirty filters can reduce airflow enough to freeze a coil, while low refrigerant can produce the same symptom and needs a technician. EPA says refrigerant work belongs to Section 608-certified technicians and advises homeowners to have leaks located and repaired rather than merely adding refrigerant.
Safe checks, step by step

At the thermostat, change the system from COOL to OFF. Stop immediately if water is near the air handler’s wiring, service switch, receptacle, disconnect, electrical panel, ceiling light, smoke detector, or other electrical equipment. Do not touch wet equipment, stand in water, operate a wet switch, or enter a sagging ceiling area; call the appropriate HVAC, electrical, or emergency professional.

From a dry, stable area, place towels or a shallow container only where you can do so without touching or moving HVAC equipment. Move belongings away and photograph the water path, ceiling stain, cabinet area, thermostat setting, and any error or float-switch message. Do not remove an access panel, open a drain pan, climb into an attic, or work from a ladder.

Check the return-air filter only if it is in its normal homeowner-accessible slot. If it is dirty or wet, switch off the system as directed by the owner’s manual and replace it with the exact size, airflow direction, and approved type. Do not run the system without a filter, stack filters, use an unusually restrictive filter, or reach inside the air handler.

Confirm that furniture, rugs, curtains, boxes, and closed dampers are not blocking accessible return or supply registers. Look—but do not touch—for frost or ice on visible insulated tubing, the cabinet exterior, or around a register. If ice is visible, leave cooling off. Never chip, scrape, heat, or melt ice with tools, hot water, or a hair dryer.

If the condensate drain outlet outside is known and safely reachable from ground level, observe whether it drips while the system has recently been cooling and note any algae, debris, or standing water around the outlet. Do not insert wire, compressed air, chemicals, bleach, vinegar, or a vacuum into an unidentified drain; do not loosen fittings, caps, traps, pumps, switches, or drain-pan parts.

Keep cooling off and arrange HVAC service when the source is unclear, the leak was more than a few drops, the filter is wet, ice is present, the drain appears backed up, the system stopped on a float switch, or water returns after the filter correction. Ask the technician to diagnose airflow and drainage, inspect the pan and condensate pump if present, and use EPA-certified refrigerant practices if the sealed system must be tested.
Stop and call a professional if
- Water is touching or approaching wiring, a switch, outlet, disconnect, electrical panel, ceiling fixture, smoke detector, motor, control board, or other energized equipment
- A ceiling is bulging, sagging, cracking, actively dripping, or stained below an attic or upper-floor air handler; keep people out from underneath it
- There is visible ice or frost, weak airflow, warm air, hissing, oily residue, repeated freezing, or poor cooling that could involve a coil, blower, duct, or refrigerant problem
- The leak continues with cooling off, the drain pan overflows, a condensate pump does not operate, a float switch repeatedly stops the system, or water returns after a correct filter change
- There is a burning or electrical odor, smoke, sparking, unusual heat, a hot or buzzing breaker, damaged insulation, or a breaker that trips or will not reset
- Inspection or repair would require opening the air handler, removing a panel, entering an unsafe attic or crawlspace, climbing, handling wet electrical parts, clearing internal drains, testing circuits, or opening or charging the refrigerant system
