Refrigerator running warm: the checks that protect your food

A blocked vent or dirty condenser may be simple. Compressor and sealed-system faults are not.

Safety first Disconnect power and water only when you can do so safely. Stop for gas, damaged wiring, flooding, or instructions beyond the owner’s manual.
  1. 1

Move perishable food if the refrigerator cannot hold 40°F or below. Food safety comes before troubleshooting.

  2. 2

Confirm the control setting and make sure packages are not blocking interior air vents.

  3. 3

Vacuum accessible condenser coils after disconnecting power, following the owner’s manual.

  4. 4

Check that the door closes fully and inspect the gasket with a strip of paper for weak sealing areas.

  5. 5

If the freezer is cold but the fresh-food section is warm, or the compressor repeatedly clicks, arrange professional diagnosis.
